My Teenage Music

Sophomore Year of High School I rocked the unicurl and big pink glasses!
I challenge you to make a music track of your high school years.

I'm starting ones for myself, prompted by this scarymommy article. I'll share them as they are complete.  It turns out that I need to buy a lot of music because my high school music was on tape, and I don't own any of those old cassettes. It's weird thinking about the music I liked. I can't remember a lot of what I listened to in high school versus, say, early college. I'm trying to pick songs that I have a specific remembrance of.

I've added some of my music to a list, but some of the music that I'm going to need to purchase is as follow:

  • "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye" by Boyz II Men (my Senior class song)
  • "Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna  (I remember being shocked that she'd sing about such a thing)
  • "Cold Hearted Snake" by Paula Abdul  (Used to sing it with friends when they got cheated on.)
  • "You Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer (everyone knew it, and I even owned mustard colored Hammer pants)

Some of the first few things added to my list were:

  • "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaaa!" by Napoleon XIV (Evelyn gave it to me on a mixed tape)
  • "Sweet Child O'Mine" by Guns N'Roses  (Stephanie used to like when it came on MTV)
  • "Parents Just Don't Understand" by Fresh Prince  (The song that made me no longer be allowed to watch MTV in the livingroom)
  • "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS  (The "most romantic" song I knew freshman year)
  • "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" by Elton John  (I just loved ballads and Elton John)
  • "Greased Lightning" from Grease  (I LOVED GREASE!)
  • "You've Got a Friend" Carole King  (I used to listen to Carole King on repeat)
  • "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel  (It was so weird to me that I had to play Uptown Girl on bassoon that I doubt I'll ever forget practicing it in Roger's garage)
  • "We Will Rock You" by Queen (This makes me think of marching band for some reason...)

The list will get longer. It's going to take some time. If we went to high school and there's a song that really stands out for "us" let me know!

Once it's ready, I'll post it on 8tracks.com so everybody can access it.

Do you mean the music I listened to while I was at high school, or the music that everyone else who was coincidentally at my high school in the same time period listened to?

Because I'm not going to lie to you, everyone else's choices in music sucked.
