Tax Day: April 19!

I was wondering why Tax Day is Tuesday, April 19, this year, so I did a bit of googling.

It turns out that April 16 is a legal holiday in Washington Dc, Emancipation Day. Government employees get the day off. However, April 16 is on a Saturday this year, so per government regulations, Emancipation Day is being celebrated on the Friday before April 16, which is April 15. April 15 is supposed to be Tax Day but now it is falling on a holiday. Therefore, per the rules that say that if Tax Day falls on a weekend then it's moved to Monday, Tax Day 2016 was moved to Monday, April 18, 2016, in most of the United States.

Here's where it gets funny. Massachusetts has a holiday that most other states don't have - it's called Patriot's Day (some people call it Marathon Monday since they hold the Boston Marathon on Patriot's Day). Since Monday, April 18, is a holiday in Massachusetts, our tax day will be April 19.

SIDE NOTE: Facebook doesn't have a sticker for "feeling superior because my taxes are done," or for "I shouldn't feel superior because my friend was after me to get that last piece of information to her for two months and finally called and got it herself last week because she was sick of me not doing it."
