I Dream of Naked Electronics

I enjoy my iPhone 3GS, and holding a smooth, unscratched iPhone makes me happy. However, mine is bulky and rubbery, not cool and smooth to the touch. I have it in the case of mighty protection which has allowed me to drop it in icy puddles, onto tile floors, and even hand it to toddlers who just drank juice. Unfortunately, it's impossible to get it out of the three layers the case is made of. The AT&T sales guy put it on for me, and I've tried to take it off for cleaning with zero success.

I prefer my electronics to be naked and unencumbered when they are in my hands. I have a sleeve that slides onto my Kindle, but I don't have one of those book cover things or a skin because I prefer to feel my kindle when I hold it. I have the Kindle 3, and I have no plans to downgrade to the new Kindle Fire. I want an ereader, not a tablet.

My MacBook Pro is so beautiful. I was asked to stop stroking it in public when I first bought it. Apparently it was embarrassing. I hadn't even realized what I was doing! There's no skin or plastic case on it because I like naked electronics and because I don't want dirt to get trapped under the skin and scratching it. I have a neoprene sleeve for putting it in my motorcycle Tbag backpack (the link is to the updated version, mine is over 10 years old) which doesn't have a laptop slot. I also have a smaller backpack with a laptop slot.

Sometimes I like to look at laptop skins even though I prefer my electronics to be unadorned. They can be bright and colorful, and as long as you don't get the same one as everybody else, a skin can individualize your computer. When I sit in a tea shop or a coffee shop surrounded by other folks tapping away on their Macs, I sometimes like blending it. Other times, I wish there was something about my MacBook Pro which differentiated me from the others or even made them envy me.

I tend to prefer skins that don't have specific pictures on them like this one. Sometimes when I see an awesome one, all I can think is, "Shiny!"

However, I won't be buying a skin. For one thing, I want the apple light to show through. For another, why waste money on a skin when that money can be used for something important like purchasing a season of The Guild!  Woohoo Felicia Day!

I like some naked electronics, but most of them are built by Apple. Their design is fantastic.
